The 4 elements (Earth, Water, Air, Fire) correspond to the 4 states of matter (Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma.)

This is also why “quintessence” used to be considered the fifth element. It was a catch-all term for the matter things in space were made of, since back then we didn’t know what it was.
